<Ghost emoji> spooky szn
I’m cooking up some really dry nonsense for next week, so this week I’ll leave you with a few bangers you can play on your porch while kids trick or treat.
Witches of Eastwick: Dance of the Witches (John Williams) — Bonus violin and piano arrangement
Danse Macabre (Camille Saint-Saëns)
Symphonie fantastique (she’s back!): Songe d’une nuit du sabbat (Hector Berlioz)
Marche funèbre d'une marionnette (Charles Gounod)
Hallowe’en (Charles Ives)
Totentanz (Thomas Adès)
Last Round (Osvaldo Golijov)
Toccata and Fugue, BWV 565 (J.S. Bach)
Symphony No. 10 in E minor, II Allegro (Dmitri Shostakovich)
Dante Symphony: Inferno (Franz Liszt)
Three Ghost Rags, No. 1. Graceful Ghost (William Bolcom)
Der Erlkönig, Op. 1 D. 328 (Franz Schubert) — Bonus solo violin arrangement
Almost all of these composers have been featured in a previous post 😵💫 I’ve got to diversify.
OK I have to tell at least one story… Der Erlkönig is a poem by Goethe where a father and son are riding on horseback at night and the son tells his father he can see the terrifying Erlkönig, or the king of the fairies.
The father explains away whatever his son is seeing. Maybe it’s just willow branches. Or fog, perhaps.
Erlkönig tries to lure the boy away by promising him fun, new clothes, even a shot at a date with one of his daughters. Making no progress, he decides to take matters into his own hands.
The boy screams but his father does nothing more than plough ahead faster.
When he reaches his destination, he turns around only to learn his son is dead.
<Menacing cackle as I ride away on a broomstick>
I’ve made a Spotify playlist of the music cited above (and more)! Check it out.
